Angel's Choir

The children of the ANGELS choir come from Television, a small village in the state of Kaduna in northern Nigeria, West Africa. Here the local people struggle daily to survive with limited food and fresh water. Just a few laterines are used by thousands of villagers and the community’s two schools and baby centre are partly built and massively overcrowded. Without additional water supplies and laterines we are unable to continue to finish off the necessary building works.

The ANGELS choir was founded by Father Anthony Ikhenoba from the Diocese of Kaduna and was launched in the UK by Clare Walters on World Aids Day, 1st December 2006.

Father Anthony recognised that the children had a talent – their voices – resulting in songs worthy of the highest accolades. In forming the choir, his aim is to restore hope into the lives of the children by giving them the chance to help their community through the gift of music.

20 children, aged between 8 and 16 years, have been invited to join the ANGLES choir. Proud to be part of this very special venture, they sing from their hearts with incredible passion, wholeheartedly committed to doing whatever they can to help improve the conditions in which they, their families and friends live.

“The ANGELS try in any way they can to help themselves in what only can be described as challenging circumstances. They strive to do this independently and it is because of their struggle that they fully appreciate your interest in their plight” Father Anthony Ikhenoba

The Pandemic in Kaduna extends well beyond the child to the communities in which they live. Millions of parents have died, impacting on the emotional, economic and social wellbeing of those they leave behind. Children in affected families often have to nurse a sick or dying relative, raise younger siblings and run the house or farm, struggling for survival, often on the streets.

The story of the battle against the epidemic whose deadly grip continues to spread is worst amongst the poorest and the most effective tool we can offer our children is to allow them the right of shelter, food, fresh clean water and a chance of an education enabling them to become part of Africa’s New generation.

When you listen to the ANGELS sing, they invariably give cause for silent reflection. Attempts to describe them range from hushed admiration to “Simply amazing” – outstanding accolades considering these gifted children live desperately tragic lives, every one of them affected by hardship and suffering as disease rages through their community with mindless thought of whom it touches.

The ANGELS voices soar with passion and hope, not only are they giving pleasure to others, they are helping themselves through their heartfelt performances whilst raising funds for others. Twenty children from the ANGELS choir will come to the UK this year for an experience of a life time, they will sing in concerts designed to show the audience their culture and youthful enthusiasm. By doing so they continue to raise awareness of the urgent need for our help.

The scale of sickness and death in Sub-Saharan Africa is placing immeasurable strain on it’s people and there is still so much we can do to help. ANGELS is a non profit organisation run by a group of people who give their time freely, dedicated to helping vulnerable children from the poorest parts of the world. The funds we raise are used to support the most needy, improving their living conditions and a chance to enjoy a better quality of life.

Following the tour this year we will give other children from the ANGELS choir the opportunity to perform in the UK, Europe and America continuing to raise awareness. Our aim is to take them one step further towards a brighter future. To help us achieve our objectives we monitor and receive feedback on a regular basis with the help of personnel in country.
